Whatever happened to Buell Motorcycles? If you ride it as a commuter you’ll get miles out of it. Erik Buell leaves Harley, looks happy again! Take a glance in the neat and very well positioned mirrors, turn the ignition on, wait for the fuel pump to finish and the check engine light to go out, thumb the starter and feel what cc of off balance vee twin does to a very light frame. The exposed frame, swingarm and colour co-ordinated aluminium wheels are charismatic. I am so shocked at how bad the power delivery is,twist the throttle and it all bogs down. The little flyscreen does just as much as it looks as though it will, and as a result you end up either with a bit of a weave from the death grip you are exerting on the bars trying to stay upright or you give yourself an excellent abs workout as you take the strain and try to sit into the howling gale.

The solution is to treat it firmly – you don’t soothe the Lightning into first or cajole it into second. Best bike I ever ridden.

And as for nuell equipment, why it gets two stars byell me as the speed triple get 5 stars which is also a streetfighterwhich is just as minimalist. Much improved in the model year as the gearbox and clutch were brought up to Jap standards.

Buell XB12S Lightning

It feels very well screwed together, and though the clocks may not be the clearest in xb12w world the rest of the controls fall biell and easily to hand. The XB12S Lightning a revised, updated version of the bike motoring. You see, that front brake may look a little odd, and may not even be that impressive at first glance, but it has the sort of stopping power normally reserved for unlit skips on quiet back roads.

Above rpm this big, brutal torque-mountain of an engine pulls smoothly and the pulsating world in the mirrors comes sharply into focus. Factory extras include a gel seat, rigid panniers, frame protectors, loads of carbon and dress up parts and more.

The wide, flat handlebars, which feel so good in tight bends, start to jerk and xb12 like a fish on a hook.

The big rim-mounted front brake rotor is powerful enough to lift the rear wheel. This big twin has the handling to outpace anything on four wheels and many things on two.

I had a XB12s and it was excellent especially the engine,i really loved the responsive punchy power. But its torque band is immensely broad and a clever exhaust system maximises performance.

Japanese four-cylinder engines and British triples achieve more power from less capacity but the Buell seethes with the grunt required for short-range bueell.

Bring on the dry roads and roundabouts. Blasting and leaning through tight, undulating bends was a joy. I was simply amazed at how you could become one with the buell so quickly.
